WHO WE ARE

Our stand

A perspectival cultural life needs a diversity of voices and actors. It is absolutely essential that art and cultural life is accessible, safe and inclusive for everyone. Representation and diversity are a strength and a necessity to reflect the world we live in. There must be equal access to experience art and culture with different artistic expressions and formats.

Kunst & Kultur i Balance is a change initiative for the entire art and cultural life. We work to break down structural barriers, share knowledge and resources and create awareness of how unconscious bias and privilege can be used actively and positively in change work.

Our focus is:

  1. To create knowledge and insights for everyone who works in the arts and culture industry
  2. To create real changes in behaviour, culture and structures
  3. To facilitate learning through practical methods and experiments in daily work
  4. To collect learning and experience across the board – use what works and change what doesn’t
  5. To co-create a joint industry resource with practical measures, tools and methods

Our story

Kunst & Kultur i Balances strength consists in the fact that the initiative is built jointly by organisations across the arts and culture industry.

Art & Culture in Balance was initiated by the music organisation Art Music Denmark in 2020 as a result of the many testimonies of transgressive behaviour from women in the music industry. The initiative quickly spread to involve 31 organisations across music, visual arts, film, theatre, museums and the performing arts.

In 2022-2024, KKIB was run by a steering group consisting of Aarhus Filmværksted, Art Music Denmark, Dansk Komponistforening, JazzDanmark, ROSA, Roskilde Festival and Tempi, where the focus was on creating methods to continue, anchor and future-proof the initiative.

Project ownership is from 2022 with Tempi. The day-to-day project management is run by ROSA and Tempi. The day-to-day administration is handled by Art Music Denmark.

Since the start-up, we have trained more than 600 agents of change from the Danish art and cultural life, published an Argumentation guide and Knowledge Manual for free use, held network events and workshops and participated in panel debates. All to create awareness of how to create change and to give our colleagues tangible tools for the change work.

In 2024, we entered into a closer collaboration with our Norwegian sister organisation Balansekunst to create the framework for knowledge and experience sharing across the Nordic region.
